HOWTO: Setting up a TeXing Environment (WinXP)

Summary
  • Basic LaTeX environment (MikTeX 2.7 with CJK support)
  • Eclipse platform (TeXplise)
  • Virtual printers and ps eps pdf tools
  • Plotting tools (MetaPost, gnuplot, matplotlab)
  • Miscellaneous

Basic LaTeX environment (MikTeX 2.7 with CJK support)

  • download MikTeX 2.7 Net Installer (i.e. the installer) @ http://miktex.org/2.7/setup
  • use the intaller to download basic packages to a local directory, say D:\miktex-2.7
  • run the installer to setup a tex environment at C:\TeX\texmf
  • launch the Settings utility in the start menu and:
  1. point the package repository to D:\miktex-2.7
  2. install packages: cjk and cjk-fonts
  3. add a root directory C:\TeX\localtexmf as LOCALTEXMF
  • download and install CTeX-Fonts (CJK fonts) at http://www.ctex.org/CTeXFonts
  • download and install gbi2uni (this console program transforms GBK characters in LaTeX .out files into unicode, which avoids corrupted CJK pdf bookmarks)
  1. download source code (gbi2uni.{hc}) at http://lsec.cc.ac.cn/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/cct/cct/#dirlist
  2. compile and place at C:\TeX\localtexmf\gbk2uni\bin
  3. add C:\TeX\localtexmf\gbk2uni\bin to PATH (the environment variable)
  • download and install Ghostscript and GSView
  1. download Ghostscript (gs) and GSView (gsv) at http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/
  2. install gs to C:\TeX\localtexmf\ghostscript\gs
  3. install gsv at C:\TeX\localtexmf\ghostscript\gsview
  4. add C:\TeX\localtexmf\ghostscript\gs to PATH (the environment variable)
